THIS WEEK'S ASTROLOGY - The World Soul : Jupiters' in Sag / Venus Goes Direct

A look at the astrology of the week of November 13, 2018 - November 19, 2018

As golden light pours through the transitional portal to the northern winter and the southern summer, we are tracking some inspirational movements of the Soul of the World - the anima mundi - as planets change signs, change directions, and generally signal a change in our motivations and outlook on the future. The first big sigh of relief for so many of us comes with warrior Mars’ entry into the dreamy, aquatic sign of Pisces after an incredibly long six months (May 15 - Nov 15) in Aquarius. Mars typically only spends about six weeks in a sign! But the summer’s test of our commitments and resolve will serve us well as we enter this next movement of the World Soul, as we may have shaken loose enough from bindings to grow in new directions.

The planet of love and harmony, Venus entices us to action as she returns to direct motion on Nov. 16 in her home sign of Libra. While Venus works her magic well in relational Libra, she is heavily stimulated by our friend Uranus and will be singing songs of liberation, songs of agitation and urging us out of our hesitations. We should try to open ourselves to the sweetness Venus will offer—as perhaps things that we wanted to go in one direction end up leading us somewhere even better than we could have imagined (or engineered). Clear eyes and an open heart are essential to recognizing Venus’ immediate blessings, especially since things are a little complicated by messenger Mercury’s square aspect to the blooming, buzzing confusion of Neptune when Mercury stations to retrograde motion (Nov. 16). Be extremely wary of both giving and receiving mixed signals, as well as miscommunications based on overestimations or exaggerations or getting ahead of oneself.

One way to work with this extended Mercury square Neptune aspect (Nov. 9 - Dec. 21) is to attend to or engage Neptunian ways of knowing, such as divination, intuitive awareness, bodily awareness, heart-based cognition and reading or writing a lot of poetry. However, look out for the trickster at play from Nov. 9 to Dec. 6, since Mercury’s backwards motion and awkward square to Neptune lends itself to deception, delusion and wishful thinking. So keep in mind that Neptune’s influence is improved with practices that center our consciousness. You might also try letting your words spill out onto a clean page free-flowing and uncensored throughout the retrograde period. Stream of consciousness expressions could reveal vital depths of your own Soul, in both its wounding and its strength.

The anima mundi also celebrates Jupiter’s entry into his home sign of Sagittarius on Nov. 8, offering strength to Jupiter’s realms of faith, hope, optimism, justice, inclusivity, growth and philosophical ideals. For the past year, Jupiter has been colored by the hidden and the taboo symbolized by Scorpio. His transit of Sagittarius until Dec. 2019 will offer us a chance to act upon revelations and ideals which took shape under Jupiter in Scorpio (Oct. 2017 - Nov. 2018). It is critical to make your faith real, to ground your aspirations in reality and not let Jupiter’s buoyancy carry you into naive avoidance of reality. As political commentator Molly Ivins once said, “If you’re not at the table, you’re on the menu.” Jupiter’s influence will undermine us all if we fail to ally it with the stern sobriety of the Saturn-Pluto alignment (2018-2021).

Using the metaphor of a “birth contraction” to understand Saturn-Pluto’s influence, Jupiter’s time in Sagittarius represents “the big push” in the birthing process, and 2019 will witness many movements towards the birth of a new world. It is fortunate to have Jupiter’s strength of inclusivity of others and their different perspectives—we can call upon him for diplomacy as much as for adventurous travels into new realms with the body, heart-mind and Soul!  Just note that Mars’ square to confident Jupiter (exact Nov. 19) may fuel our sense of Jupiterian adventure both for better and for ill. “Look before you leap” takes on a powerful significance when it comes to making commitments and choosing directions in the near term. It’s better to let Mercury’s retrograde carry you through careful consideration and re-consideration and if possible, not make any major decisions until after Mercury returns to direct motion on Dec. 6.
