A Rare Full Blue Moon in the Philosophical Sign of Sagittarius: Your June MOON SIGN REPORT

A Rare Full Blue Moon in the Philosophical Sign of Sagittarius: Your June MOON SIGN REPORT

The month of May gifts us with a Blue Moon on May 31, the second Full Moon in a calendar month, and it falls in the adventurous sign of Sagittarius! As the Full Moon rises in the East, we’ll see Venus and Jupiter glittering together in western skies while they converge in the intuitive sign of Cancer on June 9. Not long after, the second retrograde cycle of messenger Mercury starts creeping into the deep-feeling sign of Cancer in mid-June, where it will emphasize the value of revisiting or redoing things.

Gemini season ends on the June 21 Solstice, when the sign of Cancer initiates the longest day of the Northern Hemisphere and the shortest of the Southern. Since the Sun at the Solstice will be at the midpoint between freedom-seeking Jupiter and revolutionary Uranus, we could observe some Solstice foreshadowing of what the wildly unpredictable Mars-Uranus conjunction of July 4-5 will bring.

Full Blue Moon in Sagittarius

On May 31, the free-ranging Sagittarius Full Moon rears up over Eastern horizons and reaches her maximum exposure to the quick-witted Gemini Sun at 1:45 am US/Pacific. She presents us with a Blue Moon, the uncommon occurrence of a second Full Moon in a calendar month, following the  Beltane Full Moon in Scorpio on May 1. Sagittarius is the province of the jolly giant Jupiter, and this lunation ignites the joy and expansiveness created by Jupiter’s joint expedition with loving Venus through the generative sign of Cancer from May 18 to June 13.

For many, the Blue Moon could provoke a bubbling over of emotions that may be righteous, sublime, or simply enthusiastic about whatever most preoccupies us. In traversing the philosophical sign of Sagittarius, the Moon arcs across a cosmic receiver dish formed by the three ambassadors to the cosmos—Uranus, Neptune and Pluto—to remind us of our higher, more transcendent ideals from May 30 to June 1. We might be drawn to consider both family and tribe, our ways of belonging, and how we might expand our belonging. This lunation could also have us pondering how our quest for safety has limited or diminished our possibilities. Optimism, or at least a willingness to experiment, could seep into the early parts of June.

Venus Conjunct Jupiter

Among the sweeter symbolisms of Venus conjoining Jupiter on June 9 is a love of freedom and the ability to open one’s heart to love. Occurring in the growth-oriented sign of Cancer, we are offered an exalted experience of these two dancing together, and might glimpse an understanding of the Czech playwright and statesman Václav Havel’s words while still a dissident in a gloomy time, “I understand [hope] above all as a state of mind, not a state of the world. Either we have hope within us, or we don’t…. Hope is not prognostication. It is an orientation of the spirit, an orientation of the heart. Hope is not the same thing as optimism. …It is not the conviction that something will turn out well, but the certainty that something makes sense, regardless of how it turns out.”

The brief window into all that makes life worth living presented by much of the month of June offers a good time for fortifying ourselves for the rest of a year that holds some challenges yet to come. Whether we need some deeply restorative, rejuvenating time or have the energy to take advantage of a good influence for building up family ties of all kinds, whether chosen or inherited, now is a great opportunity to fill up the metaphorical gas tank.

Mercury Retrograde in Cancer

Communicator Mercury can assist in the process of weaving or reweaving social networks with their upcoming retrograde motion through the sign of Cancer. On June 12 Mercury steps out onto the zodiac they will retrace, and eventually slows down to station retrograde on June 29. We may find long-lost contacts from chosen families or families of origin re-entering our lives. For some, these could have a deeply karmic or fated quality. Perhaps we have lost touch with these loved ones over several lifetimes and get to reunite now, or we’re simply surprised by the endurance of what seemed like fleeting connections from earlier times in life.

Mercury’s connectivity will dwell in the protective waters of Cancer over nine long weeks, from June 1 to August 9. The usual retrograde Mercury advice of thinking twice before expressing a big emotional reaction to information or communications counts doubly here, as we will likely be both more connected to our emotional state and yet less clear about the nature of our feelings. Setting aside things that are upsetting and returning to them the next day can be quite surprising and clarifying, as if we had received completely different information the day before.

Mercury Retrograde Dates:

Mercury enters retrograde shadow at 16° Cancer: June 12

Mercury stations retrograde at 26° Cancer: June 29

Mercury stations direct at 16° Cancer: July 23

Mercury leaves retrograde shadow at 26° Cancer: August 7

Chiron Enters Taurus

Turning from the boundary-crossing zig-zagging trickster Mercury to the boundary-defying centaur Chiron, we will witness the completion of a significant, inaugural cycle of this asteroid. The wise centaur Chiron will be completing his first full cycle around the Sun in the next year, entering the earthy sign of Taurus on June 19 for the first time since he was discovered there in 1977. We might imagine mythic Chiron’s fate as a suffering, unhealed healer as symbolic of humanity stretched between two opposites of being both a predator animal and a prey animal. The ability to obtain food is a necessary survival skill of time immemorial, honing a discrete part of our perception of the world (predator), while the ability to care for our world, connect as social beings and see larger gestalts or patterns (prey) is an equally necessary survival skill with just as long a heritage.

At this point in history, Chiron traveling the Venusian and productive sign of Taurus raises the question of whether humanity will so identify with the predator aspect of human nature that we end up quite literally consuming our world and ourselves along with it.

The Venus-Jupiter conjunction is also in a provocative square aspect with Chiron at his entry to Taurus, querying us about what it means to love and be loved. What does it mean to belong to a greater wholeness, and how do we even do that? Are we a part of a human family, let alone a greater-than-human family, together with all our kin on spaceship Earth? Ultimately, the profound vulnerability of Chiron in security-seeking Taurus for the next eight years could teach us how to set free our capacity for love, that it flows in ways that are truly nourishing.
