COSMIC CURRENTS: MEDICAL Astrology + Herbalism

The Aquarius Mystery

Aquarius is depicted as a man pouring water from the spout of a large urn, or amphora. What exactly does this water symbolize, and why is he pouring it out? And, what might this mean for our personal health? Herein lies the mystery of Aquarius!

Aquarius is one third of a trilogy of “air” signs, inclusive of airy colleagues Gemini and Libra. All three of these signs are represented by two non-curving adjacent lines. Neither are any air signs depicted by animals. Together, the three air signs govern the nerves and neurological currents coursing from the body to the brain, and from the brain back to the body. Could these adjacent lines symbolize this?

However, the air trilogy also strongly influences the venous circulation of the blood, whose vessels literally run alongside the arterial vessels! Their adjacent lines perfectly symbolize that process, too! Air signs also govern the process of oxygenation. Could these sigils suggest the dual process of inhalation and exhalation via the venous and arterial vessels? We discuss the circulatory system and its zodiacal rulerships in my Human Anatomy 101 course, co-taught with Nurse Jessica McConnell.

Charged Frequencies of the Air Element

Aquarius is unique among the signs because its sigil’s two lines run “zig-zag” in the manner we illustrate bolts of lightning. Exactly right! Aquarius is our singularly most “electrical” sign, seeming to hold rulership over the little-known electrical forces and exchanges within the body, with fellow electrical signs Gemini and Sagittarius chiming in.

Aquarius also appears to strongly influence the inward flow of finer astral forces into the dense physical body via the chakras and a network of subtle channels known as “nadis.” Could these fine energies be symbolized by the “water” pouring from Aquarius’ vessel?

Aquarius’ puzzling electrical problems confound physicians and escape diagnosis! Aquarians also seem uniquely prone to vitamin and mineral deficiencies, depression, anemia, fatigue, varicose veins, and internal cold. After all, mid-winter is the coldest time of year in the Northern hemisphere. Ancient astrologers knew little about nerves, circulatory systems, or electricity. However, they did comprehend what electricity does. It is noteworthy that the same herbs used to protect houses from lightning strikes were also used to prevent epileptic seizures (which we now know are caused by electrical storms in the brain).

The medical astrologer must similarly observe effects to discern causes. In the medical evaluation of “Aquarius cases,” one notices spasm, neurological issues, electrical problems of the nerves or muscles, heightened nerve sensitivities, suboxygenation, and problems with the quality of the blood. This sign appears to strongly influence, or “govern” the flow of bodily electricity, oxygenation, fine astral energies, plus the carbon-oxygen exchange process that occurs throughout the body.

The Water Bearer's Sacred Stream

I contend that the “water” flowing from Aquarius’ amphora symbolizes the life-giving electrical forces carried through the nerves; and also, the “pneuma,” “ruh,” “prana,” or “vital spirit” that is known to be carried, in part, through the oxygen molecule.

Aquarius holds other meanings too, because Aquarius represents a guide to humanity at large, representing an evolved, individuated person who has moved beyond normative human identities. On the spiritual level, the celestial “Water Bearer” dispenses the waters of vision, guidance, and knowledge to aspiring humanity. Aquarian biographies are replete with remarkable thinkers whose life legacies extend well beyond self-interest to humanity at large. Abraham Lincoln comes to mind, as does Franklin D. Roosevelt and Oprah Winfrey.

Get ready for an extra dose of Aquarius energy! Venus, the Sun, Mercury, and Mars serially enter Aquarius between January 17 and 27, 2026. The Aquarius New Moon graces this same period, on January 18. A doubly strong Aquarius season remains in effect until February 18, with Mars not exiting the sign until March 2.

Astrologically, this is the ideal time to build the blood, increase oxygenation, reduce electrical spasm, shield and ground the nerves, inwardly warm, and strengthen the integrity of the venous circulation.
