Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis), a member of the mint family, is considered a calming herb. It was used as far back as the Middle Ages to reduce stress and anxiety, promote sleep, improve appetite, and ease pain and discomfort from indigestion. Studies show that lemon balm may be helpful in reducing anxiety symptoms by elevating mood and reducing levels of stress hormones. Additionally, lemon balm has been shown to improve cognitive function and reduce feelings of stress and tension.
An herb rich in history, used as a medicinal stable by every ancient civilization ever known. Chamomile is a nervine, known to soothe the nervous system, assist with anxiety, stressed muscles, and can help with a restful sleep. Chamomile is also used to soothe skin irritations, breakouts and for nerve damage.
Can significantly lower cortisol levels, stress, anxiety and depressive symptoms. It's better than standard anti-anxiety and antidepressant drugs as it stabilizes mood, relieves insomnia, and revitalizes the body without any side effects or withdrawal symptoms. Moreover, it can manage weight and food cravings in chronic stress patients.
Passionflower is commonly used to gently restore debilitated nerve centers as it supports nutrition uptake at the highest cellular level. It also supports a calm and relaxed effect on the body during times of stress. Passionflower also promotes a healthy sleep, especially where restlessness, wakefulness and interrupted sleep are the chief complaints due to debility or exhaustion. The whole plant is used to make medicine, yet the stem and leaves seem to have the highest amount of chemical activity.
Lavender (Lavendula angustifolia) has been shown to affect the parasympathetic nervous system. The parasympathetic nervous system controls bodily processes associated with anxiety, such as heart rate, breathing rhythm, and hormone secretion. Lavender can help in regulating these bodily processes by restoring a neutral state.
