When every other tree has dropped its leaves, the evergreens stay green. For thousands of years, people have brought their boughs indoors at midwinter as a promise that the light would return, and burned their needles and resins to purify and protect the home. FOR-REST is a candle for slowing down: a forest to retreat into, and an invitation, as its name says, to rest. Five conifers, from the forests of Europe to the Himalayas to the old-growth hemlock groves of New York, come together to ground the body, clear the space, and bring the hush of the winter woods indoors.

Key Botanicals + Traditional Uses

• Scotch Pine (Pinus sylvestris): Grows across Europe and northern Asia. A symbol of endurance, vitality and renewal, long hung at midwinter for protection.
• Bhutan Cypress (Cupressus torulosa): Planted at temples and sacred sites in the Himalayas. A tree of eternity, grief and transition, traditionally seen as a bridge between worlds.
• Juniper (Juniperus indica): One of the oldest cleansing smokes. Burned in Scottish new year blessings and Himalayan offerings to purify homes and protect against harm.
• Hemlock Spruce (Tsuga canadensis): A long-lived, shade-loving tree of eastern North America’s old-growth forests, including here in New York. Associated with protection, shelter and quiet wisdom. (No relation to poison hemlock.)
• Cedarwood (Genera Juniperus and Cupressus): Sacred across many traditions, from the cedars of Lebanon that built ancient temples to the purifying medicine of many Indigenous cultures. Associated with protection, strength and grounding.
